Woodpecker

woodpecker hole

Look at the size of this hole! We have a woodpecker that pecks away at our trees but then he went for the deck. He likes the deck because the annoying carpenter bees lay their eggs in the wood to create more annoying carpenter bees. The woodpecker then, in the Darwinian hierarchy, goes after the eggs and pecks until he gets them. We have three holes like this. I must say though, he is one beautiful bird! Just gorgeous. I haven't caught him with the camera yet but have seen him close up...he's almost a foot high.
